Hamilton-Burlington SPCA employee Shannon Woods with a female Shih tzu cross about three years old. Her furry friend is one of 83 healthy adult dogs (over eight months old) that arrived at the Dartnall Road shelter from Louisiana around 2:30 a.m. Oct. 1. The dogs, including many smaller breeds, are the latest canine victims of hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike. The dogs were brought to Hamilton by BARK Rescue, based in Alexandria, Louisiana. BARK has been working with the local SPCA for about three years. The dogs have been put up for adoption and all are expected to find new homes quickly. About 52 puppies from Louisiana were turned back at the border due to suspected illness. The SPCA hopes to have the puppies checked out by a veterinarian in New York state and bring them to the east Mountain shelter at a future date.
