Great pumpkin
Eight-year-old Ethan Madden along with staff sergeant Dominic Palmieri (left) and sergeant Mark Petkoff were judged to have carved the best pumpkin at the Mountain police station Oct. 17. The pumpkin carving contest was part of the Rogers Communications 24th annual Halloween safety program. The program sees the company team up with police to provide safety tips for little trick or treaters.

Catholic educator retires after 41 years
Alexis Fama and Zachary Zampini from St. Thérèse of Lisieux Catholic Elementary School presented retired Superintendent of Education Remo Presutti with a spiritual bouquet prepared by students from the various West City schools that he supervised at a Mass of Thanksgiving in his honour. Presutti's 41-year teaching career was defined by "his dedication and commitment to what is important in education," said Director of Education Marcel Castura, "the teaching and learning that goes on in the classroom. Helping children was his passion and priority."

Anti-poverty goal seeks to supplant ‘woozy rhetoric’
McMaster University social work student Brooke Camplin helped develop a post-card campaign urging the province to reduce poverty by 25 per cent in the next five years. Based on a quilt sewed by teens at the Arrell Youth Centre, more than 4,000 of the cards will be presented to Children and Youth Services Minister Deborah Matthews on Monday.
