The Hamilton Major Peewee Cardinals turned in their most dominant performance of the year when they routed the Kitchener A's 13-0 at Breithaupt Park on July 9.
Hamilton pitchers Willie Pettener, Robbie White and Joey Brown combined to allow only one baserunner, a fifth inning walk. Offensively, Robbie White hit two mammoth home runs and the Cardinals scored 11 times in the fourth inning.
For the second straight year, the Cardinals traveled to Pennsylvania for the Mansfield University Summer Classic July 11-13.
The Cardinals played four games against all-star American teams comprised mainly of Bantam-aged, 14-year-old players. Adding to the challenge of facing competitive, older teams, the Cardinals used Bantam-age distances for both the pitcher's mound and bases.
These factors were too much to overcome and Hamilton lost their first game to the Raleigh Baseball Institute 9-1 on July 11. In the third, the Cardinals led the game 1-0 on a run scored by Willie Pettener but the defence was unable to hold a hard hitting Raleigh team.
On Saturday morning, Hamilton faced the Academy Stars and fell 12-2. Once again the boys had to make adjustments for longer pitches and throws on a major league sized field. Marcus Dicenzo and Robbie White scored the only runs for Hamilton.
In their third game, Hamilton trailed 3-2 to Northumberland County All Stars going into the seventh before giving up four runs, two of which were unearned. The Cardinals went on to lose 7-2 despite a fine pitching effort from Devin Holmes. Matt Michalski had a run scoring single and Cole Petsche had a run scoring double in the loss.
In the final game, Hamilton lost 3-2 to the host team from Mansfield. Laine Renaud had an RBI single for the Cards in the loss. Despite their 0-4 record, the boys played competitive baseball throughout the tournament and held their own against older, bigger and more experienced players.
The Hamilton Cardinals AAA Midget squad dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Stratford on July 10 at Mahoney Park. The first game featured a dominant pitching performance on both sides, but an error and the only hit of the game surrendered by starter Jeff Cummings in the last inning resulted in a 1-0 loss.
Game two saw the Cards down by a 5-0 score in the fifth inning, before a three run rally was sparked on base hits from Shane Southall and Kyle Adoranti. A Zack Ranta double in the seventh scored two more runs to tie the game up and send it into extra innings. The Cards couldn't keep the momentum going as they lost 6-5.
