Jul 25, 2008

The Hamilton Cardinals AAA midget baseball team travelled to Jack Crouch Park in Kitchener July16 and came away with an 8-2 win.

Hamilton opened the scoring in the fifth inning when Kyle Gappa led off with a triple and scored on a Damon Dicenzo single. Anthony Risquez capitalized on some shoddy Kitchener defence as he reached second base after striking out thanks to a passed ball and an error by the Kitchener catcher. Risquez scored when Cards starting pitcher Mike Gottschalk lined a single into right field.

Kitchener knotted the score at two in the bottom of the sixth but the Cardinals rallied for six runs in the seventh inning to put the game on ice.

With one away in the top of the seventh Dicenzo scored on a Travis Flint double. Brett Barrowclough and Eric Johnson chipped in a pair of two-run singles before Steven Hubbs capped the rally with an RBI triple.

Matt Hill threw three shutout innings in relief to get the win, striking out six and surrendering only one hit.

Major pee wees win

The Hamilton major peewee Cardinals scored seven runs in the first inning en route to an 18-5 win over the Red Sox in Brantford July 17.

Cole Petsche had two singles and a triple. Ryan Hare showed great patience at the plate getting three walks. Devin Holmes also had three hits to help pace the Hamilton attack. Troy Valeriano picked up the win for the Cards who are now 14-5 on the season.

The Hamilton Cardinals hosted their first major peewee AAA tournament the weekend of July 18-20. Top teams from around the province competed in a tune-up for the upcoming provincial eliminations to be held in Whitby during the holiday weekend in August.

Hamilton's first game was against Intercounty rival Cambridge on July 18 at Mohawk Sports Park. After the Cards jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, Cambridge came back for a 6-5 win.

Hamilton's next game was against highly ranked North York on July 19. Bad weather halted game play with the score tied at three in the top of the fourth. After the rain stopped, the game finally resumed on July 20 with North York coming away with a 6-3 win.

Inclement weather shortened the tournament significantly and Hamilton was unable to face Brampton in their final game.

The Cards were slated to host the Guelph Royals July 23 at Mohawk Sports Park.

Minor pee wees defeated

The Guelph Royals beat the Hamilton minor pee wee Cardinals 24-3 at Mahony Park July 15.

The Cards' offence was led by Nick Ott who hit an RBI single, walked and scored, Tyler Goldmann, who doubled and scored, Grant Preece, who hit an RBI single and Lucas Johnson, who made a squeeze bunt for an RBI.
