It took Hamilton police nearly a month to get information from several initially reluctant witnesses, but in the end they did get the name of a suspect following an assault on a Mountain senior.

"It was a brutal, violent attack on an old man," said Sergeant Matt Kavanagh of the Mountain Criminal Investigation Division of the Sept. 13 attack that sent a 75-year-old man to hospital with large gash to his face.

Police say a noisy, all-night party with about 50 people on hand at a house on Mohawk Road East spilled out onto the front yard of the home during the early morning on Sept. 13.

Around 6:30 a.m., the senior, who lives two doors down from the house and was unable to sleep due to the noise, went out for coffee.

Police say as the man was driving past the party house he stopped, rolled down the passenger window and asked the five or six people standing on the front lawn to keep the noise down.

At that point a male at the party threw a bottle at the senior's car, leaving a dent in the passenger door.

Police say the senior then did a u-turn and returned home to call police. After the senior got out of his car the same young male who threw the bottle ran across two front lawns and attacked him, whacking him in the face with a bottle.

According to police the assailant continued to pummel the senior until he was pulled away by two other people from the party.

The victim's wife heard the commotion and came outside. She helped her husband back into the house and called police and an ambulance. The victim required stitches to close the gash to his face.

Police say the owner of the house where the party was taking place was not home at the time and the owner's son had organized the gathering.

A 19-year-old man is facing assault, assault with a weapon and mischief charges.
