If you’ve driven through the red light at the pedestrian-activated cross-walk on Concession Street at East 22 recently, your licence plate number may be on file at the nearby community policing centre.

Volunteers from the centre have watched the intersection three times this year, most recently last week, monitoring westbound traffic for vehicles that drive through the red light. The volunteers make a note of plate number, type of vehicle, time of day and whether it was a male or female behind the wheel of all vehicles that don’t stop when the light turns red.

“This was the result of complaints of pedestrians crossing the road and they were being impeded by vehicles making improper turns,” said John McPherson, cocoordinator of the community policing centre.

Mr. McPherson said the volunteers counted 315 vehicles between 11:45 a. m. and 12:30 p. m. on Nov. 6. Of those, eight vehicles did not stop for the red light.

“It indicates (drivers) are not paying attention or they don’t care,” Mr. McPherson said.

Around the same time of day on Aug. 5, Mr. McPherson said, the volunteers counted 955 vehicles roll through the area and nine of them ran the red light. Similarly, on July 7 they observed three red light runners amongst 440 vehicles counted.

On all three dates, none of the drivers who ran the red light appeared to be using a cell phone.

Mr. McPherson said groups of three volunteers wearing florescent vests watch the traffic while standing on the sidewalk on the north side of Concession Street in front of the Royal Bank.

Const. Diego Mejia, the officer who works out of the Concession Street community policing centre, said the information gathered by the volunteers helps him determine if police need to pay particular attention to certain intersections in the area, adding motorists can expect to see him and his ticket book on hand in the coming weeks, doing a special enforcement at Concession and East 22nd.
