“We started as just a jazz jam band,” says Matt McKenna, one-third of Garner, who are getting ready to release Purple on Nov. 28.
But before long, says the Mountain resident, the trio were gelling and decided to get serious.
McKenna, who plays piano and keyboards and serves as the lead singer, along with James Bloemendal (guitar) and Matt McFarland, who both reside in Brampton, started to write their own songs, they just needed a name.
“We came up with a bunch of terrible names, but eventually we came up with Garner,” says McKenna.
Garner, for the name of the street Redeemer is located on as well as the fact they would have to garner fans and interest in order to build their careers.
McKenna, who grew up in Caledonia, says the band is taking a new direction, a mix of funk, rock and pop, with Purple.
“We get the comparisons of Stevie Wonder and Barenaked Ladies with a little John Mayer mixed in,” he says.
Garner is holding a CD release party Friday, Nov. 28 at 7:30 p. m. at the Westside Concert Theatre, 434 King St. West. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. For more information, email info@garnerband.com .
The first track off Purple is available for download at the band’s website, garnerband.com .
Purple will be available through soon through the iTunes store.
