The Knights beat the Fighting Irish 33-7 in the GHAC final last season and the two clubs are set to meet again this morning at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Game time is 11 a. m. The winner moves on to the Golden Horseshoe Bowl semi-finals next week. More is looking for its third straight Golden Horseshoe Bowl title this season.
More advanced to the GHAC final with a 21-0 win over Mountain rival St Jean de Brebeuf at Ivor Wynne Stadium Nov. 14. The Knights could have run up the score even more if not for five More turnovers. STM head coach Claudio Silvestri said the Knights have been plagued by turnovers all season and they’ve been working this week to try and correct that.
“We’ll do ball carrying drills and (ball stripping) drills so the kids are hanging on to it,” Silvestri said.
In addition, the team has been practising with a heavy ball this week in a bid firm up their grip. “Hopefully it will correct itself,” Silvestri said.
Conditions at Ivor Wynne today are expected to be cold, windy and damp and the Knights have been working out in the cold all week to prepare for those conditions.
“We’ll try to keep it simple and try to minimize our mistakes,” is how Silvestri describes STM’s game plan against Notre Dame.
He noted the Burlington squad has a fleet-footed offence and likes to pass the ball, so the Knights defence will have to come up big again today. “We have to be aggressive with them,” Silvestri said.
Knights quarterback Victor Raso is still recovering from a sprained left ankle, but Silvestri noted, like last week, Raso will be running the offence. He also expects six-foot two, 245 pound offensive lineman Matt Giammichele to return to the line-up from injury.
In addition to playing in front of their home town supporters, having the game on the turf at Ivor Wynne Stadium should also benefit More, who have used their speed on both sides of the ball to their advantage this season. “We feel any time we play at Ivor Wynne, it gives us an advantage,” Silvestri said.
Also at Ivor Wynne today, Cardinal Newman faces Bishop Ryan in the Hamilton Catholic school junior football final.
