In a playoff preview on Tuesday, the first-place Lions hammered fourth-place Waterdown 23-3 to finish the regular season at 7-0.
Those same two teams meet in Division 1 semi-final action at Ivor Wynne Stadium at 3 p. m. on Monday.
“The boys are hungry,” said Lions head coach Paul Cooke. “They want to repeat as champs.”
Cooke said this year’s squad features a more balanced attack then last season’s championship squad.
“Our defence is as strong as it ever was and this year we have put together a dynamic offence,” Cooke said.
The Lions’ attack is lead by a strong offensive line, which has provided excellent pass protection for quarterback Chuck Wall and opened some big holes for tailback Jimmy Hill.
Cooke calls Hill “arguably the best football player in the city.”
The veteran defence includes linebacker Angelo Miller, who sacked the Waterdown quarterback twice during the second half on Monday.
Meanwhile, Hill led the Lions’ attack with two touchdowns and a two point convert.
Cooke said MacNab opted for a two-point try instead of the usual single point kick following their first touchdown after long-snapper Jamie LaLonde had to leave the game briefly with an ankle injury.
Connor Hitchcock rounded out the Lions’ scoring with field goals of 27 and 25 yards and a single-point convert.
In the other Division 1 semi-final, second-place Delta battles third-place Westdale at 5 p. m. on Monday at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
Division 2 regular season action wrapped up Thursday after press time with first-place Orchard Park at Hill Park and second-place Westmount at Churchill. Sherwood was at Parkside and Macdonald played Highland.
The Division 2 semi-finals are slated for Nov. 12 at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
Playoff matchups had not been confirmed as of press time.
