What’s holding you back from returning to school?

There is no arguing that these are tough times. The employment rate has skyrocketed with the vast number of layoffs. In addition, the labour market has become increasingly specialized. There is no better time than now to go back to school and re-train.

I started my journey in academia in 1988. At that time, I took on a full load of classes at McMaster University. I soon discovered that going to school full-time was not my gift. For the next 10 years, I did odd part-time jobs with the dream of going back to school. In 1998, my dream was realized when I finally made the decision to return to school.

I have never regretted my decision to take on the task of gaining a degree. There are many rewards to obtaining an education. Yet there are common excuses that I used during the 10 years of waiting. These are common excuses people use as reason not to go back.

Excuse 1: I don’t have enough money

At first glance, this may seem to be a barrier to obtaining an education. When I started university, I had very little resources. Going back part-time helped me. I was able to obtain a grant for a period. There are hidden funds available if you do some research.

Excuse 2: It will take too long

I must admit it takes time to get an education. It has taken me 10 years to finish my degree. I also think 10 years was going to pass anyway. Take time to think where you want to be in the next 10 years. Those years will pass you by before you know it.

Excuse 3: I don’t have what it takes to go back to school

Before I started higher education, I needed to do some upgrading. It is unrealistic to think you will be able to jump right in without some planning. Assessing your skills is an important part of the journey. Once you have a good understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, you will be able to build on that foundation.

Excuse 4: I’m too old

I have heard this excuse many times. Holding yourself back because of your age only robs you of opportunities. Age is mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.

Once I stepped onto the path toward higher education, I realized that the journey was just as important as the destination. I have deepened and expanded the essence of who I am.

Within the process, I have learned that I can move beyond the perceptions of my limitations.

You can, too.
