Two employees have been charged after the A&W restaurant at 931 Upper James St. near Hester was entered last Sunday.

Police say two men — one with a key to the back door, the other with the code to switch off the alarm — entered the building just after 2 a. m. The duo tried but failed to open the safe and left empty-handed.

Police say the manager was able to identify one of the intruders on the security video and it was later learned both were employees at the restaurant.

A 20-year-old man from Hamilton and a 20-year-old man from Peterborough were arrested and released on a promise to appear in court.

Police said an 18-year-old female who also works at the restaurant and was involved in the entry was not charged.

Big Mac attack

An 18-year-old east Mountain man learned the hard way that arguing and driving, especially if you’ve been drinking, don’t mix.

Police say the man and a friend were driving along Lawfield Drive near Coral Drive around 10:41 p. m. last Saturday when the friend took a bite of the man’s Big Mac.

The two then began arguing and the man lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree.

Neighbours called police who arrested the driver and took him to the central police station downtown where he blew nearly twice the legal limit.

He was released on a promise to appear in court.

The passenger was not charged.

Asleep at the wheel

A 25-year-old east Mountain man was given a promise to appear in court after police were called to Dicenzo Drive near Aquasanta Crescent around 3 a. m. Nov. 20.

Police said they found a man slumped behind the wheel of a car at the side of the road.

The suspect’s foot was on the gas pedal and the vehicle was revving loudly.

Police say the car was in neutral at the time.

The suspect was awakened and taken to the central station where he blew twice the legal limit for alcohol.

Gas bar robbed

Police are looking for three men after the Pioneer gas bar at Mohawk Road West and Garth was robbed at gunpoint.

Police say the trio, described as black men ranging in age from late teens to late 20s, walked into the gas bar around 5 a. m. Nov. 19.

One of the men pointed a silver handgun at the clerk, who was pushed into a rear storage room while the robbers took cigarettes.

They fled in a silver car, possibly a Toyota Camry.

Police say the men may also be responsible for some variety store and other business robberies recently in the east end.

Copper stolen

Ten 50-foot coils of copper welding material was stolen following a break in at Walter’s Welding at 1318 Rymal Road East near Dartnall sometime last weekend.

Police say thieves broke through the fence and then smashed a window to gain entry to the shop were the coils were stored.
