Hamilton Spectator reporters have been nominated for two Canadian Association of Journalists awards.
Reporters Fallon Hewitt and Grant LaFleche are finalists in the Daily Excellence and Community Written Feature categories, respectively, for the national awards. Winners will be announced at a June 1 gala in Toronto.
Hewitt was nominated for her work on a horrific breaking news story detailing the fatal shooting of a Stoney Creek couple by their landlord and the proceeding deadly gun battle between the shooter and police. Hewitt was on scene as residents sheltered in their basements and the shooter engaged with officers.

LaFleche was nominated for his part in a multi-newsroom investigation into growing far-right extremism in southern Ontario. LaFleche dove into the dark underbelly of the internet to help expose fast-growing local neo-Nazi group “Nationalist-13” and their attempts to push their ideologies out of the shadows.
“Fallon and Grant are top-notch reporters, committed to getting the truth for our readers in an increasingly challenging industry. It’s just a tiny portion of the excellent journalism the entire news team performs daily,” said Metroland Media editor-in-chief Paul Berton.
The Spectator honours are among 86 nominations in 19 award categories.
