5 Free Things - March 13
Columns
Mar 13, 2009
It’s not the best of economic times out there and it’s hard to stretch what few dollars you have left after paying for the essentials. To help you out, each week we’re highlighting five things you can do for free (or real cheap).

1. Go green. Elizabeth May, leader of the federal Green Party, will be at Goodness Me!, 1000 Upper Gage, Saturday from 11 a. m.-12:30 p. m. to launch her new book, Global Warming for Dummies. Free admission but limited seating.

2. For the kids. Tinkerbell will be screened during March Break Movie Madness at the Central Library, 55 York Blvd., Monday at 2 p. m. On Thursday, also at 2 p. m., it'sWall-E.

3. Artistic women. Just one week left in the 113th annual Women's Art Association of Hamilton juried show and exhibition at Art Gallery Hamilton, 123 King Street West. Dozens of pieces from the city's top female artists on display.

4. What kind of city do you want to live in? A Guelph Civic League rep will talk about the creation and growth of a values-based grassroots movement that started with 100 people and reached just under 15,000 within a year, changing the face of local democracy between elections. It’s at 7 p. m. Thursday at Workers Arts and Heritage Centre, 51 Stuart St.

5. Speaking of art. Kahlo: The World Split Open is a free presentation of spoken word and image by Mohawk College teacher and poet Linda Frank, inspired by the tumultuous life and paintings of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Saturday, 8 p. m., in room 1A1, Ewart Angus wing, McMaster University Medical Centre. Bus stops almost at the door. More details at www.haalsa.org .
