It’s not the best of economic times out there and it’s hard to stretch what few dollars you have left after paying for the essentials.

To help you out, each week we’re highlighting five things — with a bonus item this week — you can do for free (or real cheap).

1. Five things you can do for your river. Hear of ways to beautify your property and deal with rainwater at the same time during a stormwater workshop, Saturday 9 a. m. until noon at the EcoHouse, 22 Veevers Avenue. RSVP: 905-540-8787 ext. 15.

2. Spring cleaning. National Cleaning Week wraps up Saturday. If you haven’t spruced things up around the house, you should get to it soon.

3. Visit the tropics. You can enjoy spring flowers, exotic birds, fish and turtles in a tropical environment during Spring Tide at Gage Park. This free show runs until April 5, weekdays 9 a. m.-3 p. m. and weekends 9 a. m.-4 p. m. The greenhouses are located north of the parking lot off Lawrence Road.

4. Get some new clothes. Bring your gently used women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing and accessories and shop at St. James Church, 137 Melville St., Dundas, Thursday April 2, 6-9 p. m. All proceeds go to The Weekend To End Breast Cancer. Not free, but all items $2 each.

5. Play a joke. You know what day it is next Wednesday. If you pull off a really good one, let us know.

6.Celebrate Earth Hour. Not only is it free, but turn out the lights between 8:30 and 9:30 Saturday night and you can save a little bit, too.
