A 31-year-old Mountain man faces drunk-driving charges after hitting two cars and then wiping out a bus shelter as he tried to pull his pickup truck into his home's driveway.
Sergeant Terri Collings said Hamilton police were called shortly before 6 p.m. last Saturday after a Chevy Avalanche ran into two vehicles at the intersection at West Fifth Street and Mohawk Road West.
The driver hit one car, backed up, hit the second vehicle, and then continued toward the corner of West Fifth and Limeridge Road, where he missed badly on an attempt to turn into his driveway.
He instead crashed through the bus shelter and a fence before coming to a halt in the backyard.
The suspect ran into his home, but was arrested by police. He later blew more than twice the legal blood-alcohol limit on breath tests.
The man remained in custody after police opposed his bail. He faces charges of impaired driving, driving over the legal blood-alcohol limit and driving while under suspension.
Sgt. Collings said the misadventure was the worst among several incidents involving drinking and driving over the weekend.
Some motorists are still "not getting the message" even though recent changes in the law could now result in the loss of their vehicles and licences for a second conviction in the past 10 years, she said.
"There is absolutely no logical excuse for anybody to get behind the wheel of a car after they have been drinking," Sgt. Collings said.
"If you are stopped, you will be charged accordingly and find yourself with your vehicle being towed and your licence suspended."
