The flag ship of the Shoppers Mountain fleet has brought new life to the western end of Concession St. in concert with the new Tim Horton's across the road. Once the site of the proud and famous "Hillcrest Restaurant", Shoppers people must have read their history and much to the delight of area residents retained the mosaic tile logo of the Hillcrest imbedded in the sidewalk at the corner. Kudo's to the planners saving this curiosity. Perhaps the manager can now convince the grand poobahs to mount a picture or two of the Hillcrest inside the store near the exit. Lots of empty wall there! The brilliant indirect lighting and wide aisles provide access to a myriad of merchandise capably attended to by friendly, knowledgeable staff. The store is a far cry from the tiny old Concession Drugs that was situated at the corner of Concession St. and East 23rd. many decades ago. Amiable old Cliff Downs was the proprietor then, the kind of pharmacist that new all the old timers in the hood and their offspring. Wicked old cures like Cod Liver Oil and Castor Oil could delivered a knock out punch to just about anything back then. His Spirits of Camphor sniffed up the nose under a towel usually cleared the nasal tract and that husky cough caved in to a double dose of good ole' Buckley's guaranteed to cure ya 'er kill ya. Noted for his thinning yet still wavy brown hair and tortoise shell glasses perched on the southern most extremity of his nose, he exuded an appearance of relaxed ; rural informality that always made a trip to his store very pleasant. A throwback in time that happily finds a place in our fondest memories. His legacy seems to have been reincarnated down the Old Stone Road at the lovely new Shoppers Drug Mart. Go see!</P>
