The T-Birds were hammered 30-0 by the Twins in Mississauga last Saturday and according to league statistician, Herb Morell, it could be the largest ever rout in league history.
At press time he was still looking through the records.
The largest margins of victory he’s been able to find prior to last week’s game were both in 2005 when Guelph beat Stratford 28-0 on May 14 and 32-3 on July 21.
The highest game total for runs scored is 40 when London beat Kitchener 21-19 on May 31, 2007.
While the win might be one for the record books, the Twins for the most part did not have to face many pitchers with IBL experience.
Down 5-0 after the first inning and 11-0 after two, Thunderbirds general manager Larry Wood said it was evident very early in the contest that Twins batters were going to have a big game while Mississauga starting pitcher Luis Castillo was giving up few hits.
The T-Birds coaches decided not to waste the arms of their pitchers and instead included positional players among the five hurlers they sent to the mound.
Some hadn’t tossed a pitch since their rep baseball days.
“It was a conscious decision,” Wood said. “We knew it was going to look ridiculous.”
The sacrifice paid off as the T-Birds edged the Twins 4-3 at Bernie Arbour Stadium the next day with Nino Fasulo getting the win in relief of Ryan Van Spronsen.
In a June 30 make-up game the Thunderbirds edged the Twins 3-2 at Bernie Arbour Stadium. Matt Martinow, who allowed no runs and four hits over seven innings, was credited with the win.
In London last Friday, the Majors took advantage of some early Hamilton errors en route to a 7-4 win.
The Thunderbirds take their game on the road this week.
They were slated to visit Toronto Wednesday night (result not available at press time), visit Brantford on Friday night and make their first ever visit to Ottawa to play the Fat Cats in a double-header on Sunday.
It’s a big series for the T-Birds. At press time they were tied with
Ottawa for last place in the nine-team IBL loop. The top eight clubs make the playoffs.
