Trevor Monaghan’s No. 13 car in the NASCAR Canadian Tire series will be dressed up in the Canadian Heroes motif in that series' race at the Honda Indy.
“Honestly, it’s breathtaking if you see it up close,” he said. “I don’t think there’s been a nicer wrap put on a race car.”
The Canadian Heroes project, which grew out of a song produced by Georgie Fab and L. Stu Young and featured the vocals of Gord Lewis, Ian Thomas and Brian Melo, with backing by the St. Michael's school choir, is headed up by Mountain entrepreneur Chris Ecklund.
Ecklund, who called the entry “Canada’s car,” is footing the bill for the race weekend — it costs about $25,000 to prepare a car for the series — and is also getting new fire suits and helmets in the Canadian Heroes motif for the pit crew.
“This is basically a one-off deal, but with the response we’re getting so far, everyone is saying it would be a shame if we couldn't race the car again,” he said.
“The call I’m putting out to everyone is: This is your car. If Canada wants to see this thing run — I mean it’s a rolling memorial to our soldiers — we need sponsors.”
Monaghan said the team is hoping to get enough sponsorship to race at the Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal later this summer. Ecklund added he has talked with the team owner about turning the venture into a non-profit group and run the entire series with the Canadian Heroes livery. That would provide an opportunity for educating the public and school children in particular about the soldiers’ role in our country, he said.
“It’s amazing what we could do with this, but we need sponsors,” he said.
The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 Jump-start 100 will be shown live Saturday on TSN starting at 2:30 p. m.
The Heroes website is at CanadianHeroes.com
