The Games are held every four years and prior to that, athletes must qualify at the provincial level.
There were 66 swimmers chosen for Team Ontario, and they competed against provincial teams from all of the provinces and territories. Ultimately, from these Games, a team will be chosen to represent Canada next year at the International Games in Greece.
Shearer earned a gold in the 200-metre backstroke and a silver in the 200-metre individual medley.
Cleland earned a gold in the 200-metre individual medley and the 100-metre butterfly; silver in the 200-metre butterfly and bronze in the 200-metre backstroke.
Restivo earned a gold in the 50-metre butterfly and a bronze in the 200-metre freestyle.
While the swimmers had to focus on the pool during the week, they also made and enjoyed the friendships of other swimmers from across Canada.
If you feel you have a swimmer in your family who would be interested in joining a Special Olympics swim club or if you know of anyone with coaching experience in swimming who would be interested in volunteering, contact Mary Cleland at 905-648-4844.
